Permanent Creeps are killing it these days. Fact. I will battle anyone saying otherwise. Just look at the incredible run of bands they released: SXSW alumni Italia 90, Birmingham own prodigies Souki or On Video, who are heavily championed by 6 Music.
And then we have London based four piece – Gaygirl.
The band consists of Bex Morrison (vox, guitar), Lewis Clark (guitar), Louis Bradshaw (drums) and Tom Coyne (bass) and you better write the name down, cause you will be hearing about them a lot. After playing with the cream of the indie circuit: Calva Louise, JOHN, Piss Kitty and Hotel Lux, Gaygirl are preparing to release their EP “Pleasurehead”.
Their first offering – “Mikkel” – was made song of the week by Jack Saunders on Radio 1 and gathered rave reviews from the likes of Clash Magazine.
Second single “Killing It” will be surely met with similar response from the industry. It is three minutes full of fury, grungy riffs and absolutely stunning vocal deliveries. Imagine L7 self isolating with Veruca Salt in the same house and having a hell of a time. The Mysterines just met their match and I have a feeling that Gaygirl may overtake them in few years time.
Once this pandemic is over the Londoners will surely be on my list of bands to see live. It would be fantastic if they could come to Birmingham to play our iconic Sunflower Lounge* (could you guys bring Soeur with you?). If anyone can make arrangements, please do so, I will be in the pit.
In short: Gaygirl are awesome. And Permanent Creeps win the contest for the coolest label of 2020 hands down.
* Editors note – Gaygirl have twice played The Sunflower Lounge, once as the headline act for our goodselves and also more recently as support for Calva Louise back in December.
