The backstory of A Place In Between is unique. Last year, between working 30-hour hospital shifts, Belgian doctor Gert Stockmans needed to find a new avenue for stress relief. He found it in a guitar which was just lying around his house. Already with contacts in the music scene as a band photographer, he collaborated with Thomas Francot and has been hard at work creating an album, of which ‘Syn’ is the second taster.
‘Inspiral’ was the first, coming out last September, however ‘Syn’ takes a less conventional approach to song-making. With restrictions coming in and out of place, they wanted to create a song which could be created within Thomas’ homestudio, and so ‘Syn’ was born. It’s a deeply atmospheric track making use of moody synths and electronic beats creating a dark and twisted vibe. I love that it’s a purely instrumental effort as I think vocals would have taken away from the song. Wherever their upcoming album takes them, A Place In Between will make something which is definitely worth a listen.
