Live Review – The Teals @ Muthers Studio

The Teals

The Teals

Muthers Studio

Review by Kirsty Harrod

As soon as The Teals took to the stage, you knew you were in for a fun night. With a strong, Strokes-like guitar sound, dancey basslines and moody vocals, this band of 18-year-olds made the most of the screaming crowd of friends who danced along to every song. Their lyrics bounce between teenage angst and classic indie, complementing their covers of I Predict A Riot and Chelsea Dagger – songs which I believe came out before any of The Teals took their first steps. Is this the indie sleaze resurgence we’ve all been hearing about?

But The Teals are a band that don’t quite know themselves yet. The drummer who took the mic for a rendition of No More Virgos had a beautiful voice, but the song didn’t quite fit in with the rest of their set. And since they played four covers in their hour-long gig, they clearly didn’t have enough original songs yet – but the ones they did have, like Sally, definitely have potential. I left with the sincere hope that The Teals continue playing gigs, writing music, and exploring their sound.

A special shout out to the lovely little venue, Muthers Studios, which also has rehearsal spaces, a bar, and a pool table!
