‘Traffic’ is the second single from Katy Kirby’s debut album ‘Cool Dry Place’ which will be released on 19th February 2021 through Keeled Scales.
This is a multi-layered, entertaining and downright catchy pop tune with clever lyrics, funky/poppy musicianship and at its centre a brilliant vocal performance from Katy Kirby. She has a genre-spanning voice, which she uses here to maximum effect.
Her band sound amazing and frequently dip into a wide musical influence pool. There is quirky indie-pop with some cool jazz elements, particularly the bass guitar. They are reminiscent of Edie Brickell’s New Bohemians.
This is an onion of a song. Lots of layers to explore, but without the eye stinging sensation. ‘Traffic’ stands out from the norm and will appeal to the casual listener and to the most hardened muso.
If this track is a taster of more to come from the rest of the album, then February cannot come soon enough.
