‘Wish We Could Be Friends’ is the fresh new single from Sydney-based indie-pop artist Abby Bella May.
The first thing which struck me about ‘WWCBF’ is the bouncy drum beat and bass line, which combines with Abby’s backing harmonies to create an atmospheric, bubblegum sound. It’s a feel-good track which I could easily see on any pop chart, with really solid production – there really is more to hear in the backing with every listen.
If you like your pop to have an electronic edge, this is the track for you – it’s really catchy and I love the ethereal, positive sound.
The track is inspired by the complications that come after a breakup and the tension between staying friends with them and cutting them off. Abby says: “I wrote ‘Wish We Could Be Friends’ about wishing you could maintain a friendship with an ex but knowing that in order to get over them, you’ve gotta let go”.
She certainly seems to have found not just her sound but also her peace.
